What is Family of Writers?
Since 1997, I've been teaching evening Family of Writers classes in school cafeterias for students and their parents. 2025 is the 34th season!
Family of Writers is based on the core principles of Writing Workshop, and it’s the best thing I've ever done as a teacher. It's all around writing joy, culminating in an anthology publication party.
If you dream of confident kids who love writing, there is nothing more powerful than families huddled close, putting pen to paper, and sharing stories.
Family of Writers is how we can all become better writers and grow community across the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula.
four 90-minute classes include:
Writing invitations that help students and parents experience writing as a creative, joyous, and insightful journey.
The elements of writing well.
How to recognize what writers already do well.
How to share writing aloud, and why it's important.
How to learn from every writer in the room.
How to read like a writer.
How parents can give writing response without creating power struggles and emotional meltdowns.
How to begin a process of effective revision and editing.

Family of Writers is free for participating families.
2025 registration opens on 9/8/25.
REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Your 3rd-5th grade student must attend a PVPUSD elementary school.
Registration opens on September 8th at 8 PM. Scroll below and click on the registration button for YOUR home school’s cohort.
Registration closes when the course is full or September 16th.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
When registering, you’ll be given the option to accept or not accept marketing emails from me. Please accept as this allows me to send you course-related emails during Family of Writers. If you don’t accept emails, you’ll need to seek out everything on the course portal yourself. Rest assured that I NEVER send marketing materials unless you’ve made a request. I only use your email for course-related communication during Family of Writers.
Whether you have one, two, or three 3rd-5th graders attending from your family, only register once per your entire family.
You may think you’re not registered since the process only takes a few clicks and takes you directly to the course portal. Please check your email (including SPAM and PROMOTIONS) for confirmation. If you’re still not sure, contact me and I’ll confirm that you’re enrolled.
