The theme for Summer Family of Writers is NOTICING.
Writers notice what others miss, but it's a learned skill. The good news is anyone can do it!
Paying attention to all the writing ideas that are in front of us each and every day is the foundational skill of writing.
Summer is the perfect time to practice and you can even do it on vacation.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
Experience writing as a creative, joyous, and insightful journey.
The elements of writing well and having fun at the same time!
How to recognize what writers already do well.
How to share writing aloud, and why it's important.
How to learn from every writer in the room (or on the screen).
How to read like a writer.
How parents can give writing response without creating power struggles and emotional meltdowns.
1:1 WRITING CONFERENCES
Helping students recognize what they're already doing well as writers is my passion. We’ll use the pieces students write during class to discover ways to enhance their words on the page. NOTE: Conferences are a bonus, but not required.
During two 20-minute ZOOM conferences, I build on everything we’re learning during class, but also add the following:
Personalized response.
How young writers can learn to trust their instincts about what they need to revise or edit.
How to attempt new writer’s craft, revision, and/or editing techniques.
WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? how much?
WHO: Families with incoming fourth through fifth grade students (in other words, students are still in third or fourth grade at the time of registration). Course limited to 10 families.
WHAT: Since this is a FAMILY writing class, adults write with their kids. An adult can be a parent, teen sibling, aunt, uncle, grandparent etc. Family of Writers magic happens when you put words on the page together. This is the most powerful way you can help your kids fall in love with writing. No worries if writing isn't your thing. I've got your back and I promise this won't be a painful experience.
WHEN & WHERE:
Classes 1 and 2 are on June 11 and 18 from 6 to 7:30 PM Pacific on ZOOM. Class 3 is June 25 from 4 to 6 PM Pacific inperson at Portugese Bend Beach Club.
One-on-one writing conferences are held on Wednesdays or Thursdays between 8:30 AM and 5 PM following the June 11 and 18 classes. After your S.F.O.W. registration is confirmed, you’ll receive a link for scheduling a conference that works for you and your child(ren). Writing conferences are online via Zoom or inperson at my home in Rancho Palos Verdes.
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Whatever you like to use for writing (laptop, tablet, journal, paper and pen). I prefer using paper and pen for Family of Writers. Feel free to eat your dinner or a tasty treat during class.
COST: $200 per family.
